Namimi Nipo - I also exist - Competition

The Namimi Nipo (Swahili meaning for “I also exist”) Competition focuses on those young talents interested and/or skilled in drawing & painting, handicraft and science & technology innovations. Through this, FASDO hopes to find, cultivate and motivate young people throughout Tanzania to use their talents and skills in creating things which can help them grow businesses and give them hope for the future. The award is open only for children and youth from Tanzania between 12-17 and 18-24 years old, respectively.


Drawing & Painting


Many great and successful drawing artists started drawing and/or painting at a very young age. The only difference between successful artists from the rest is just the connections and opportunities that they saw while others were not even aware of. This category is catered at helping young brilliant artists to see the opportunities that are ahead of them and how they can use the locally available materials in making their artistic works.

Each participant shall submit no more than one artwork in the context of:

  • Draw: Art that is manually drawn either in black and white or in color, on a two-dimensional surface (examples: Pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, crayon, scratchboard, marker, etc.)
  • Paint: Art created by applying pigment to a two-dimensional surface (examples: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, tempera, ink, encaustic, fresco, spray paint, etc. applied on canvas, canvas board, paper or any flat surface.)

NOTES:

  • Paintings and drawings copied from published photographs, the internet, or existing works should not be submitted and will be disqualified.
  • Artwork sizes range from A4 up to A0.
  • SUBMISSION: Please send us a photograph of your work and keep the original saved. We'll ask you eventually to give it to us!

Handicraft

Children and youth under this category are expected to create their works from scratch using locally available materials. The competitors will be needed to make up to three products from any of these craft class (Must choose only one category):

  1. Wooden handicraft (Eg. Makonde carvings)
  2. Bone, glass or metal works (Eg. Decorated sea shells)
  3. Kids toys (Eg. Galimoto)
  4. Home decors (Eg. Door mats, Soap dishes etc.)
  5. Decorative pottery (Eg. Flower pots)

NOTES:

  • The competition will take place in March 2020. Further terms and conditions will be posted at the end of February 2020.
  • SUBMISSION: Please send us a photography of your work and keep the original saved. We'll ask you eventually to give it to us!

Science & Technology Innovations


Children and Youth are normally very creative, curious and full of insights. We want to find these whiz kids and help nurture their minds to become future thinkers and solvers of Tanzania, Africa and the world problems at large. This competition intends to create new mindset for the positive change among youth and the community in general. As a result to establish a system for teaching the use of traditional and other media to encourage the youth to produce products to use in the digital age and establish a career networking system.

Participants will be any talented and skilled kids whether in or out of school; who are passionate at creating things where basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics as well as technology are involved.

NOTES:

  • Don't be limited to common Science Fair Project Ideas !
  • SUBMISSION: Please send us a FULL/COMPLETE description of your work and keep the original saved. We'll ask you eventually to give it to us !
  • The full description shall include:
    • Abstract
    • Motivation, stating the problem that you were originally concerned with
    • Question and Hypothesis
    • Methodology (Materials and followed procedures as well as the performed experiments)
    • Results: Explanation of what was find out.
    • Conclusion
    • Recommentations, Outlook, Future applications
  • Please submit a picture of a poster and/or the prototype (when applied)

All entries must be based on an informed understanding of our terms and conditions.

Eligibility and Criteria


The award is open only for children and youth from Tanzania between 12-17 and 18-24 years old, respectively. The evaluation of artworks will be based on the following conditions:

  • Originality and Personal opinion/vision: Be as creative as you can imagine! Embrace yourself with the freedom of expression.
  • Participation with one work per category.
  • Works should focus on Tanzanian culture, heritage, actuality. Suitable for publication (i.e. not obscene, offensive or indecent) and must not have been submitted in other contests or been previously published.
  • Works must to be 100% the participant(s) creation. Therefore, adult assistance must be limited (i.e. providing resource material and suggesting revisions). Each participant and responsible person (e.g. parents, teachers) must sign an entry form and attach it to the work.

NOTE: Additional conditions are be included in the description of each competition category above.

Deadlines


  • 15 March: Online registration
  • 31 March: Work submission
  • 20 April - 03 May: Online voting
  • 04 May: Winners announcement


Prize


Two outstanding works per category will be awarded with 300 USD: One for children (12-17 years old) and a second for a youth (18-24 years old) . Besides, they will have the chance to meet with stakeholdersin art and writing industry and thepublication of their work on FASDO's advertisement medias. Morevoer, prizes will be awarded at a special event in FASDO headquarter in Dar es Salaam.
