The Bongo Style Competition aims to recognize, reward and support young fashion designers, photographers and script writers and encourage young people to raise the value of African art and culture. This competition is solely for young people under 28 years of age in Tanzania.

The Three Categories

Young Fashion Designer


For those who are passionate about fashion design. This competition seeks to help young designers see the opportunities that are ahead of them.

Submission guidelines

  • Be passionate about fashion design.
  • S/He will needed to submit three high quality videos or photos of his/her designs.
  • Works should focus on the theme for the year
  • Designs should represent African culture and art.

Young Photographer


For those who want to become professional photographers. This competition seeks to help young photographers grow and find opportunities.

Submission guidelines

  • Be passionate about photography.
  • S/he should submit  3 to 5 high quality photos - either journalism photos or art and culture photos or both.
  • Works should focus on the theme for the year
  • The photos should be not more than three MB and not less than two MB.
  • The photo should be self-explanatory.
  • Every photo should have a title and description.

Young Script Writer


For young and talented screenplay scriptwriters who need opportunities to grow in the film industry.

Submission guidelines

  • Be passionate about film
  • The screenplay script should be written in either English language or Swahili.
  • Script should be not more than 10 pages and not less than 7 pages (short film).
  • The script should be written in the standard font of 12-point Courier or a slight variation (Courier Prime or Courier New).
  • All the screenplay script’s story should focus on the major theme for the year.
  • Submit in PDF format (and Celtx script writing studio is allowed).

All entries must be based on an informed understanding of our terms and conditions.

Eligibility and Criteria


The award is open only for youth from Tanzania under 28 years old at the time of registration. The evaluation will based on the following conditions:

  • Creativeness, Expression, Uniqueness and Cleanness/presentation.
  • Works should focus on African culture, heritage, and actuality.
  • Works should be suitable for publication (i.e. not obscene, offensive or indecent) and must not have been submitted in other contests or been previously published.
  • Works should be well researched.
  • Works must be 100% the participant(s) creation.

NOTE: Additional conditions are be included in the description of each competition category above.

Deadlines


  • May 30: Work submission
  • June 15: Announcement of twenty five best candidates
  • June 25 – July 27: Training for twenty five best candidates
  • July 1- July 6: Bootcamp
  • July 3: Announcement of 13 best candidates for final
  • July 3 -6: Online voting
  • July 7: Winners announced

Screening Process


After the deadline of submission all the applications will be screened by an expert in the industry to acquire top 20 entries,.

These top 20 applicants will attend their first jury panel where they will pitch their work from which the top 5 entrants will be chosen.

These top 5 talented young finalists will attend a 6 day boot camp where they will be trained and coached in their field. At this boot camp, they will refine their artwork/entry submission and attend the final jury panel where the final winner will be chosen.

Prize


The winner of each category (fashion designer, photographer, and scriptwriter) will receive a One Million Tsh Cash Price seed fund.

All finalists will receive personalized assistance in the development of their talents from our team over a period of twelve months. This assistance is available in the areas of promotion, image and communication, marketing and intellectual property.

The best scriptwriter will be sponsored to produce the film that will be screened during Afrika Film Festival in Belgium in 2018.
